Dawson County Raceway Welcomes Home Clayton Petersen Jr. and the #98 Racing Team on June 23rd, 2019. Clayton Petersen Jr. a past Dawson County Raceway Track Champion and Dominant Racer in the late 1970's will be on hand for a meet and greet and autograph session. We are proud to have this group be our Grand Marshalls for this event. Back in the mid-1970s, St. Paul, Nebraska, native Clayton Petersen Jr. was burning up the dirt tracks of central Nebraska in his Dirt Late Model, having posted 20-win seasons in both 1975 and 1976. That success came despite only three years of dirt track experience. But Petersen, only 27 years old at the time, had already raced many kinds of vehicles. He started in go-karts, raced motorcycles for seven years, raced in the Sports Car Club of America for three years and then moved to the dirt tracks. By 1976, Petersen was not only racing Dirt Late Models, but building them. But Petersen and his crew, led by George Medberry, Ron Fegter and Steve Yenny, were looking for an even bigger challenge. They found it by entering the NASCAR National Modified Championship to be held in February 1977 at Daytona International Raceway. Story by Lee Ackerman … read more
